Lake Joseph is a 246 acre non-motorboat lake in Forestburgh, just minutes from Monticello. Homes currently are exclusively clustered on the south side of the lake, and are all members of Lake Joseph Homeowners Association. Houses here range from 200K to 600K.
Lake Joseph was originally "built" in 1905 when Black Brook was dammed up to supply a monastery with hydro-electric power. That original dam has been there for over a hundred years, but time has taken its toll, and back in 1979 it was determined inadequate. There has been almost thirty years of uncertainty as owners on the lake, and local municipalities determined who would foot the enormous bill to fix the dam.
Add that to the black eye Ponzi-schemer Phillip Barry added to the mix by buying the entire back side of the lake with swindled investor money, and you have a lake that has been in flux with lower real estate prices than other areas of the county.
All that is soon to change, however. Barry's land has been foreclosed on, and a new business venture on the north side will break ground in 2014. The dam has been repaired. And the future looks bright for Lake Joseph.
The Lake Joseph Inn is also a great spot. Housed in a grand building that was once a retreat for the churches' elite, it is a 250 acre luxury bed and breakfast, that has been lauded as one of the best.
